Messy Girl, one of the first songs I ever wrote, waited in the wings until now to be recorded. I have a messy house and a messy mind. Co-producer Jimmy Dykes’ suggestion that we make it swing brought the song new life and gave us the chance to highlight some of Kansas City’s finest jazz players. And it brought my first opportunity to record a jazz vocal.

Lyrics

I have a messy house and a messy mind
I drive a messy car; I lead a messy life
With a messy dog in this messy world
I have a messy bed, I’m a messy, messy girl

But I want to come clean with you
I want to come clean with you

I have messy hair under my messy hat
Lots of messy ideas on my messy path
In my messy room I am messy dressed
Next to my messy moods there’s that messy desk

But I want to come clean with you
Yes, I want to come clean with you

I ride a messy road finding messy finds
My unmessy friends don’t mind my messy mind
I leave messy clothes outside my messy closet
Hoping messy ideas turn into messy projects

But I want to come clean with you
Yes, I want to come clean with you

If cleanliness is next to godliness
Then flawlessness is next to you
If spotlessness is next to holiness
Then stunningness is next to you

I have a messy house and a messy mind
I drive a messy car and lead a messy life
With a messy dog in this messy world
I have a messy bed; I’m a messy, messy, messy girl

But I want to come clean with you

I want to come clean with you
I want to come clean with you
