Dear Friends,
Historians are heroes, especially when they shine light on past injustice or light our way with stories of challenges overcome. A switch flips when we revel in awe-inspiring events, shared humanity, and brave individuals.
I was blown away by “Summer of Soul (…or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised).” The 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival roars back to life in footage stored away in a basement for 50 years. Directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Rolling Stone calls this documentary, “an incredible, vital act or restoration—and reclamation.”

Immerse yourself in the power of musical genius and the joy of community…

“A New York Times bestseller, Music Is History combines multi-Grammy Award winner Questlove’s deep musical expertise with his curiosity about history, examining America over the past fifty years.
Focusing on the years 1971 to the present, Questlove finds the hidden connections in the American tapestry, whether investigating how the blaxploitation era reshaped Black identity or considering the way disco took an assembly line approach to Black genius. And these critical inquiries are complemented by his own memories as a music fan, and the way his appetite for pop culture taught him about America.”

Our new Cultivate Joy ornament for the holidays and every day!

“Public Citizen is a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that champions the public interest in the halls of power. We defend democracy, resist corporate power, and fight to ensure that government works for the people – not big corporations. Founded in 1971, we now have 1 million members and supporters throughout the country.”

"It is true that how you come to history has everything to do with how history comes to you.” ~Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson
