Amplifying Hope | Week 51

Dear Friends,

We’re at peak darkness. This Winter Solstice finds me alternately spent, hopeful, and disquieted. At the end of a challenging year, I’m trying hard to befriend darkness and change. I hope you are finding ways to balance it all. May you find peace and hope this holiday season!

The story of Mary Chapin Carpenter's sublime “Bells Are Ringing”

“In the late 1990s, I had the honor to play for our service women and men in the Balkans, in the days leading up to Christmas. I traveled with the wonderful folks from the USO and Secretary William S. Cohen and his team. On Christmas Eve, our last stop was a Quonset hut in Kosovo, where the land mines were so prevalent that one had to stay on the asphalt paths between structures or risk disaster.

The experience of sharing a meal and singing holiday songs with the service women and men in that Quonset hut, on Christmas Eve, will stay with me forever. The spirit and meaning of the holiday was never clearer. There were no fancy clothes, food, presents or music. There was just a guitar and the joined voices of people far from home.”

“Honor or celebrate someone with the gift of trees. These trees are planted in forests of need across the country, helping them recover from disasters and giving back to the plant for generations to come.”
